SSD vs HDD in 2025 — which should you buy?

The short answer: SSD, almost always. Here's the long one.

Speed

A modern NVMe SSD is 20–50× faster than a spinning hard drive at the operations you notice — booting, opening apps, loading games and copying files.

Reliability

SSDs have no moving parts. Drop your laptop mid-copy and an HDD may lose data; an SSD usually shrugs it off.

Cost

HDDs remain cheaper per TB — worth considering only for cold-storage of large media libraries.

Our advice

OS and apps on a 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD; add an external HDD for archival if needed.
